Custom query 'grouping'

Hi All.

I'm trying to make a more suitable calendar view for my application.

What I want is a list of 'cards' for appointments. I want to have headings for each day, so for example:

Thursday 3rd May

Start time - End time
Subject 1

_______________________
Start time - End time            
Subject 2

Friday 4th May

None..

Saturday 5th May

Start time - End time
Subject 3


I don't need to show days without any events. If it's easier I can show them, that's not an issue. I basically just want a long list of days with events under them.

Any ideas as to how to do this? I'd think it would work perfectly if there were a way to 'Group by DATE_PART(StartTime)' or something similar to that. I think the AwareIM calendar works well for web apps, but for mobile it's a bit difficult to use (eg. When you have 10 appointments on a day)

I'm not sure that I've made much sense in this post. Please ask for clarification on anything.

If you need to group by DATE_PART you can always write a stored procedure to do this

I'm happy to learn about stored procedures and go this route. Will this work with a custom query layout? Will I be able to show a group 'label' and then items that match this label below that?

An update:

I didn't get anywhere with stored procedures. I got a stored procedure 'query' to run but had trouble with grouping due to my very limited sql knowledge.

I've now gone with having a regular grid query display, with just one column which is a text attribute which is generated with some html that I would have shown in the custom query display. This isn't ideal but will work for my current project.
