Self Referencing Object Tree In A Query ?

I can't for the life of me figure out (or find instructions) how to show a hierarchy of self referencing objects indented in a tree display as a query, not a form. I'm seeking something like what is shown in the bottom part of the attached form, but I want to display this in a query (not a form).

In other words a sort of hybrid tree/table where each row has the same columns and all levels are expanded when the query opens.

Can anyone please point me to really clear step-by-step instructions for the intellectually challenged?

There are two ways to do it:

1) Use references represented as trees as explained in the tutorial on Trees. This has to be a form, not a query, but it shouldn't matter to you - if a tree is self-referencing you just need to show the object at the root of the hierarchy.
2) Use "expansion" feature of a query. Expansion should show the same query but for a different "root" object.

The first approach will have a nicer user interface.

I really would like to have all the bells & whistles available in a query such as filters, grouping etc.
Can this be achieved if using method #1 ?

You cannot have all the bells and whistles of the query - a tree doesn't support some of them. Check out what trees support by selecting a "Tree" widget type for a reference attribute on a form.
